Magellan Aerospace Corporation and Aequs Private Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to evaluate the establishment of a jointly owned aerospace sand casting facility in Belagavi, Karnataka. The proposed 50/50 joint venture would be located within the Belagavi Aerospace Cluster and aims to enhance sand casting capabilities for both commercial and defence aerospace applications.
India currently has a limited number of aerospace-qualified NADCAP sand casting facilities. If finalized, the project could contribute to expanding regional manufacturing capacity and supporting aerospace industry demand in Southeast Asia.
Magellan operates sand casting facilities in North America, utilizing technologies such as 3D sand printing, robotics, digital radiography, and automated differential pressure bottom pouring. The potential joint venture would leverage this expertise to support global aerospace supply chains.
The two companies have collaborated previously, including the 2007 launch of Aerospace Processing India, a joint venture focused on surface treatment for aerospace components. In 2024, Magellan and Aequs signed an MoU to assess plans for an aircraft engine maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility in Karnataka.
Aequs Chairman and CEO Aravind Melligeri stated that the potential facility would align with the company's vertically integrated manufacturing strategy. Magellan Aerospace President and CEO Phillip Underwood noted that the initiative is in response to projected growth in the aerospace sector and increasing demand for sand-cast components.
