India’s Tata Aircraft Complex, dedicated to manufacturing the C-295 military transport aircraft, was inaugurated today in Vadodara, Gujarat, in a ceremony attended by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. The facility, located on the Tata Advanced Systems Ltd. (TASL) campus, will produce 40 C-295 aircraft locally, following an order for 56 of these aircraft placed by the Indian Ministry of Defence.
Under the terms of the agreement, Airbus will deliver the initial 16 aircraft from Spain, while the remaining 40 will be produced in India. This facility marks India's first private-sector final assembly line (FAL) for military aircraft, aiming to support domestic production capabilities by integrating manufacturing, assembly, testing, and lifecycle management.
The Tata-led project is set to create thousands of job opportunities and support an ecosystem of more than 18,000 parts suppliers across Indian MSMEs. The project includes contributions from several defense-related public sector units, including Bharat Electronics Ltd. and Bharat Dynamics Ltd., along with numerous private enterprises.
In a statement released at the event, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the role of private sector participation and defense manufacturing reforms in India’s recent growth in the defense sector. He noted that defense exports have risen 30-fold over the last decade, with Indian-made defense equipment now reaching over 100 countries.
The facility also underscores India’s aim to become a significant player in the aerospace manufacturing and Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) sectors.
