The Indian Army has awarded a contract to IG Drones for the supply of domestically developed Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) and First-Person View (FPV) drones. The agreement is part of ongoing efforts to enhance surveillance, reconnaissance, and operational capabilities.
The contract follows the Army’s push to procure drones free from Chinese-origin components, citing security concerns. The newly acquired drones are designed to operate in high-altitude terrains and urban warfare environments.
VTOL drones can take off and land vertically, making them suitable for areas where conventional runways are unavailable. FPV drones provide real-time visuals for tactical reconnaissance, border surveillance, and counter-infiltration operations.
Bodhisattwa Sanghapriya, Founder and CEO of IG Drones, stated that the contract reflects the Army’s confidence in indigenous drone solutions. He added that the company aims to integrate advanced technology, including 5G-enabled solutions and surveillance systems, to support security operations.
Major General RC Padhi, Senior Vice President (R&D) at IG Drones, noted that the drones are designed for tactical and high-altitude operations, with a focus on enhancing intelligence and border security.
India’s drone sector has expanded in recent years, driven by demand across defense, agriculture, and logistics. Industry estimates project the domestic drone market to reach $13 billion by 2030, with production expected to increase from approximately 10,800 units in 2024 to over 61,000 by 2029.
The Indian Army’s procurement of IG Drones’ platforms aligns with broader efforts to strengthen domestic defense manufacturing.
